We made the decision to manufacture The Zap Box after seeing what was being offered elsewhere and knowing that we could improve on them in many ways.
There are currently just three credible companies providing power-saving devices. You'll see many more advertising online but here's how to quickly filter out the scam and dangerous products.
#1 Insist on UL Safety Certification
UL safety certification is not easy to obtain and many providers choose not to apply. Without UL safety approval the devices they sell will invalidate your home and business insurance and are more likely to be dangerous.
Don't be fooled by companies advertising "Made with UL-Rated components" - that's just marketing to hide the fact that their complete device is NOT UL approved.
Insist on seeing the UL certificate / number if you're considering buying elsewhere. You can check the validity at UL.com because some sellers are known to lie about this.
#2 Plug-In Power-Saving Devices Simply Don't Work!
Ebay is full of very cheap devices that claim that they save electricity by plugging them in to a socket. Sellers market these devices knowing that most customers will never really test them and, as they are low priced, will also never bother returning them too. It's simple physics - Your breaker panel is designed to seperate the wires going around your premises so a plug-in device just cannot 'reach' other appliances in your premises.
The only power-saving devices that do work must connect into your breaker panel.
#3 Don't Be Seduced by Claims of Unrealistic Savings
Watch out for marketing phrases such as "Save Up To 40%". It's true that savings COULD be that high but it's certainly not typical.Be aware of companies using exaggerated marketing to compete. All panel-mounted power-savings devices will give the same percentage of savings as others but some marketers try to imply that theirs will give greater results in order to steal sales away from companies that offer realistic estimates.
